French Toast & Hugs Downtown 2–Follow Up

Just this month, I posted an event notification for my friend’s group, who gave away french toast on skid row in downtown LA last Sunday morning. I finally got my pictures uploaded to my computer, so here’s the follow up on the event. We had great weather, a huge crew, and an even bigger line of customers! The line stretched down the sidewalk for a block or more. I arrived in the middle of the event, about two hours after it started, and it was still totally busy. I was really impressed with the organization and how smoothly everything was run. Even the trash was collected as it went–I think we left Towne St cleaner than when we arrived!
Trying to fit the entire FTX gang into frame from across the table–the line wouldn’t break long enough to widen out!
My friend Shyam, the founder of FTX, manned one grill. If you’ve never checked out his site, it’s great. It includes slideshows and video clips of past events as well as a mailing list to be notified of the next one. He even puts together a soundtrack for each event, and hands out copies of them as well.
Shyam’s dog Daisy, who inspired the endeavor from the start. Find Daisy’s story here.
Some of the great volunteers working the line. Stations included handing out the toast, syrup, whipped cream, powdered sugar, fruit, and a bottle of water. At the end of the line were the prep stations where fruit was peeled and cut.
Near the beginning of the line, embellishing your plate with toppings.
Manning a grill….
A satisfied customer, and his plate full of fruit and whipped cream.
Even the volunteers got a slice!
Some cute kids joined the party.
The best part: could hardly keep the food around long enough to photograph….What a spectacular day!

shyam
FTX 1

january 24th, 2010

many of you never got to meet Cristina.
and i’m sorry for that.
she is a person filled with the vitality and hope and spirit of life
like a brilliant sunny day at the start of spring.
she is someone who taught me to shout out that i am alive, that i love life!
she is someone who helped me realize i deserved to be loved, as we all do.
i write “is” because although her body passed to breast cancer last year her light has not.

i do not believe that we are ever lost.
i believe that our actions will always carry us on.
i believe unconditional love is the most powerful force on this planet.

and so today, on our 14th ftx, i thank you for your action.
you are here.
and i remind you that being here today is an act of unconditional love.
two gifts you have honored me with time and time again.
i thank you for standing by me as i stand by you.
as more than friends. as more than family. as more than a gang.

as love.

and so please join me as i dedicate this ftx to Cristina. our ftx #68.

this ones for her.

FTX Downtown 2 Wrap-Up

February 3, 2010

FTX Downtown 2 Wrap-Up
FTX #14
http://www.frenchtoastandhugs.com

66 loaves of freshly baked challah bred!
60 costco bins of blueberries!!
55 dozen eggs!!!
48 costco bins of strawberries!!!! (half of all they had at my local store)
34 cans of whipped cream (not enough, not even close!)
22 bottles of 100% pure maple syrup!!!!!
100 limited edition FTX pins & soundtracks!!!!!!
and over 1,300 pieces of french toast!!!!!!!

wow.

when i wrote that i was aiming for abundance at this FTX i wasn’t kidding! but the true abundance had absolutely nothing to do with anything i brought to FTX Downtown 2.

it was you.

back in 2003 when i first hit the dusty streets handing out fried bred and syrup i was lucky enough to have a few friends help me on my way. but more often than not people showed up to eat rather than to serve. and i have nothing against that! who wouldn’t want some tasty free french toast???? not many i found out. and that was just the way it was.

but word seems to have gotten out. because at this FTX i didn’t have the 10 to 15 helpers we had in 2009 at FTX Downtown 1 – we had at least 50!!!!

50 people who came to skid row to serve.

your actions humble me and give me faith in us all.

as always, after all the careful preparation, all i see at an FTX is my grill, some browning bred, the friends around me and the line stretched out in front of me.

but what i HEARD was music!!!!

arthur conley got it right when he asked “do you like good music!?”

music was bubbling up over behind me as the line began to sway and some people even began to dance! (my MOM at her second FTX was dancing even!!!!) i felt less and less of a separation between the servers and the served. what i felt and saw was a community. a community of friends, new and old, throwing down at the biggest street party in los angeles that day!!!!

so if you’ve got stories i’d love to hear them!
and if you’ve got photos i’d love to see them!!

please post any stories to our FTX blog. just scroll down to the bottom of the page found in this link and write away!

http://frenchtoastandhugs.com/?p=328

and if you have any pictures at all please email them to me or give me a shout on facebook and i can give you an email address to send them to. the higher the resolution the better since FTX 38 will use them at some point to make a slideshow of the day.

in case you couldn’t make it to FTX Downtown 2, the soundtrack is now streaming on our site and can be found here:

http://frenchtoastandhugs.com/?p=320

thanks everyone! i don’t know what FTX Downtown 3 will be like but i can’t wait to find out.
i do know that i’ll need a LOT more whipped cream! 🙂

FTX Downtown 2 – People Get Ready!!!!

FTX Downtown 2 Flyer
FTX DOWNTOWN 2 INVITE – JANUARY 24th, 2010
FTX #14
http://www.frenchtoastandhugs.com

hi everyone, shyam here from the french toast & hugs gang!!
well it’s the closing of another year and just enough time for me to squeeze an FTX flyer into your stocking!!

for FTX it has been an amazing year.

FTX Downtown in Los Angeles on January 25th, 2009 and FTX Love in Philadelphia on July 4th, 2009.

with those two events combined we fed close to 1,000 people!!

for me it’s hard to believe that it was THIS year that we did FTX Downtown in Los Angeles.
it feels so long ago and was such an epic moment in my life. at least 5 hours of cooking with an estimated 500+ people fed.

i want you to know that the next FTX, our 14th, will be our very first sequel.

that’s right FTX DOWNTOWN 2!!!!

(the hardest decision i had about it was whether or not to use Rocky roman numerals in the title!)

one year later we will return to the same spot on the same weekend!!

Sunday, January 24th, 2010
6th & Towne, Los Angeles
8am

here is a map of the location:
http://tiny.cc/0LjP5

while planning this FTX i had two key words in mind. soul & abundance.

each ftx I make a compilation cd that I hand out for free and for fun.
you can find the past soundtracks here:
http://www.frenchtoastandhugs.com/docs/pages/ftx.music.page.html

for this next soundtrack the word is soul. the songs range mainly from the 1960’s to the 70’s and all have a soulful / spiritual feel to them. only one song doesn’t feel like that to me but it has “soul” in the title so it slid in on a technicality!

for the event the word is abundance. you may remember that at our last FTX Downtown we ran out of syrup and fruit and the bred barely held out just to the end. this time i plan to not run out of anything. i aim to have cases of strawberries and bottles of maple syrup left over at the end of it all. for example usually i bring out 4 or 5 costco sized bottles of maple syrup. this time i have 22.

if you were weren’t with us this past January then let me give you a brief description of what it’s like on 6th & Towne. for years on Sundays, the missions have people in need line up for free food. when we got there the line was all ready to go! so we set up our tables and grills and started to cook. there are plenty of jobs for people who want to make extra batter, cut the fruit and assemble the plates for the people waiting in line (i have plenty of food service plastic gloves for the people handling the food). as always we have both trash and recycling bags set up that will need to be swapped out when they are full. we even had people holding the yellow “do not cross” caution tape up to help keep the line in order.

i’ve found there are plenty of places to park your cars but not yourselves! you could always bring a chair if you needed to but from what i saw most everyone was standing – either in lines to receive food or helping to hand out food.

my plan is to set up at around 8am on Sunday January 24th with my stoves, coolers and a fold-out table. (if anyone can offer to loan another table please email me back and i’ll arrange to pick it up.)

on January 24th, i’ll post a last minute FTX update on our facebook FTX wall in case you are wondering if it is still happening. to find and sign up for the facebook ftx page please go here:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=81235971582

and of course our official page:

http://www.frenchtoastandhugs.com/

so come on down on January 24th, pick up a stellar FTX soundtrack and lend a helping hand.
until then check out FTX 38’s recent mini ftx movie compiled from quicktimes from two of the events (FTX #11 – Auckland & FTX #12 – Downtown Los Angeles).

People Get Ready

hey gang i hope your 2009 is going great. for FTX it has been an amazing year.

FTX Downtown in Los Angeles and FTX Love in Philadelphia.

those two events combined we fed close to 1,000 people!!

for me it’s hard to believe that it was THIS year that we did FTX Downtown in Los Angeles. it feels so long ago and was such an epic moment in my life. at least 5 hours of cooking with an estimated 500+ people fed.

i want you to know that the next FTX will be our very first sequel.
that’s right FTX DOWNTOWN 2!!!!
(the hardest decision i had about it was whether or not to use Rocky roman numerals in the title!) 🙂

one year later we will return to the same spot on the same weekend!!

Sunday, January 24th, 2010
6th & Towne, Los Angeles
8am

while planning this FTX i had two key words in mind. soul & abundance.

for the soundtrack (which is pretty much complete) it is soul. the songs range mainly from the 50’s to the 70’s and all have a soulful / spiritual feel to them. only one song doesn’t feel like that to me but it has “soul” in the title so it slid in on a technicality! 😉

for the event it is abundance. you may remember that at our last FTX Downtown we ran out of syrup and fruit and the bred barely held out just to the end. this time i plan to not run out of anything. i aim to have cases of strawberries and bottles of maple syrup left over at the end of it all.

and so i hope you can make it out because (and i know i’ve said it before) i can’t do it alone and i wouldn’t want to! 🙂 you are all such an inspiration to me and turning to my left and to my right and seeing my friends out there making such a huge difference is something i will remember always.

but before the event drops into downtown LA like a love bomb (to quote FTX 6) i want to offer a special invitation to all gang members to become part of FTX history.

to be on the cover of the next flyer & soundtrack!!!!!

my plan is simple.

a couple of sundays before January 24th at around 9am we meet up in our FTX shirts at 6th & Towne. the food line will be there waiting for the missions to feed them. i’m going to have the gang line up in the street with your backs to me as you face the food line. the photo will be of you and your numbers with the food line trailing out into the distance.

after the photo we can tell the people in the line that in only a couple of weeks time we will be there with all the FTX love we can serve up. love bomb delivered.

so if you are interested in being part of this unique photo shoot, then dust off your shirt and get ready! i will email the date and time for the shoot nearer to the end of this year.

and so it begins. our 14th FTX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

flying in for it all the way from melbourne australia will be our one and only FTX 14!!!!

but to pull off Downtown 2 i realized i needed more than a gang. i needed an army!!!!

so without furthur delay allow me the honor to introduce our newest FTX recruits!!!!!!!!

FTX #47 – ANDREA ROSENFELD

FTX #52 – JESSICA MADORE

FTX #53 – CHRIS STACK

FTX #54 – JENN CLASEN

FTX #55 – ASHA “I CAN’T DRIVE 55” YADAV

FTX #56 – SANDY O’NEILL

FTX #57 – MARY SEWARD

FTX #58 – CHRISTIAN SEBALDT

they say there is power in numbers….
i say there are legends in numbers.

see you in january
